I think that Hinton wanted us to see that things are hard for the Greasers. They don’t have it as easy as the Socs do. Everything that they have that is important to them or that is “real” that cannot hold on too. It doesn’t stay for a long time. Ponyboy’s says that he learned not to hold on to anything that is “real”. Everything that was “real to Ponyboy is gone besides his gang and his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. His mother and father are gone. Hinton had Ponyboy say that poem to tell us that Ponyboy may not know that way things are. I think that throughout the book, he will learn.
I think that Hinton wanted us to think that the greasers don'tm have it so easy & when something good happens to them it never stays for long they are lucky that they all haven't died. Then the soc's with every thing under the sun go & get drunk at beer blasts then start beating up greasers for fun want to complain about their problems. When they get stuff they get to keep it some sopc's don't even lift a finger and they get whatever they want. So when Johnny tells Pony to stay well, good, and stay out of troyuble.

I think Hinton was trying to tell us that it is hard for the greasers to live a live a life with little money. When he said “But only so and hour” he was trying to tell us when something good might happen it doesn’t bring enough satisfaction. Also that if something good happens it brings then joy they can only hold on to it for a little amount of time. When their satisfaction went away they then become even sadder then they were before that something good happened. “ Nothing gold can stay”, I think that means that you can’t have happiness forever.
