Why was Darry always treating Ponyboy so badly? During the whole book, I never felt that Darry was very close to Pony. Why was it like this?

I don't really think Darry was treating Ponyboy "badly" (or trying to at least). He was just looking out for him, and trying to get him to do the right thing. But until after Pony ran away, he didn't realize how much he was hurting Pony. In addition, I think it's wrong to say that Darry was never close to Pony during the course of the book. Towrds the end he actually did start treating Pony better and trying to be a better brother.

I actually disagree with the notion that Darry and Ponyboy weren’t close. They’re relationship was by no means perfect but when they hugged after the church rescue, I think Pony realized that they were closer knit than he thought. When Darry started to cry, I think it showed Pony that he was wrong in thinking that Darry didn’t love him as much as Sodapop did. I also don’t think that Darry was mean to Pony. Darry had a hard attitude because he had a larger amount of stress than any guy straight out of high school should have. He wanted Pony to succeed because he and Sodapop couldn’t. After the tearful hug, I think Ponyboy realized that. It showed that Darry could be sensitive and that he could show vulnerability and compassion towards Ponyboy.

Along with Jordan’s response I believe that Darry wasn’t treating Ponyboy badly he was just looking out for him, he doesn’t wasn’t to lose him to a boys home. Darry was being strict on Pony because they are all that they have, the fact that they are a family is what keeps them together. If they were split up then they would not be well and pony and soda would be in boys homes. Darry wasn’t trying to be mean he was just being strict it was for the best of them.

Darry was treating Ponyboy so bad because he cares about him but did not know how to show it. He also was so hard on Ponyboy because it seemed to be the only way to get him to stay safe in the streets. They do not have a completely bad relationship; they hugged right after the rescue at the church. He was also mean to ponyboy to give him motivation to good in school since his grade were slipping because of Johnny’s death.

Darry wasn't treating Pony badly. He just didn't want him to end up like Johnny & Dally. He wanted Pony to have a good life not sitting around acting hard as if he were a hood and end up in jail or dead. Darry was really just trying to look out for Pony but Pony thought that Darry was trying to be mean but really he was only doing what he did because he loves Pony.
