Nealey's Prompt

Why did the author use the poem (on page 77) about gold and how "nothing gold can stay"? Why does she have Ponyboy memorize it?

I think that the author put the "Nothing Gold can Stay"poem in the book because it really fit that moment when they were talking about how pretty it was outside, but how it would soon go away. It also went with what had happened previously in the book, how Johnny and Popnyboy's life was "GOLD" but then it all faded away when Johnny kiled Bob. I think that she had Ponyboy memorize the poem because it was a memory for him, how he used to go to school, before he got into trouble, and how, throughout all the hard times hes been through, he didnt let that poemslip out of his mind, really told the readers how much Ponyboy really cared about school, and really had a passion for the poem.

I think that the author put the poem in the book because it shows that nothing perfect and gold can stay for very long. Like Ponyboy had these perfect golden parents who really cared about him and who really loved him, only to find that they would die and that he could not have them forever. Then Ponyboy had gotten really close to Dally and Johnny and their friendship had turned into gold and then Johnny and Johnny died. Nothing had stayed gold very long for Ponyboy.

I think that that poem has a connection to Johnny last words, "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." I think that statement was supposed to contridict that poem when it said, "nothing gold can stay." Johnny wanted Ponyboy to always be gold not matter what happened, espically when Johnny dies. He also wants him to stay gold when they go through with the trial, even if things go his way or not (going into a boy's home). Ultimately, Johnny doesn't want Ponyboy to become like Dally and be tough and just stay gold and new.

I think that the author put this in the book because it has a different meaning then it shows. I think that the poem means things cannot always go perfectly and there are also things in the way of making life perfect, like for Ponyboy it’s the Socs. She has ponyboy memorize it because it fits his character and builds onto his and Johnny’s relationship with each other. When Johnny tells Ponyboy to “stay gold”, he is saying that ponyboy should stay the way he is and never try to change his personality.
