Ryan's Prompt

In the beginning of the book, when Dally was bothering Cherry and Marcia, Johnny stood up to Dally and made him stop. Why would Johnny have such a change of attitude? He was always so scared of Dally. Was it because he finally wanted to step out of the box or was it because he wanted to impress the girls?

If Johnnie and Ponyboy hadn’t run away and were caught what could the consequences be and would pony be able to stay together if he wasn’t going to jail. Why was dally so close to Johnnie, Dally was big and strong while Johnnie was small and scared.

Mimi Abbott's first prompt

What options other than running away seem actually possible for Ponyboy and Johnny after they kill Bob? Hinton makes us think that running away isn't such a good idea, and in real life we are taught to stand up and take the consequences for whatever when we do wrong. Do Ponyboy and Johnny actually have choices?

First Question/Prompt

The Outsiders cuts society into two warring factions. In fact, in America, many competing groups (each new wave of immigrants, for example) have squared off against each other wherever jobs and money were scarce. However, America is also a battle ground for competing values and beliefs. What are two groups in real life whose values or beliefs set them in opposition, and why does this particular conflict seem especially unnecessary, or why does it seem especially crucial in shaping America into a great and beautiful country?
